Magnetic Complete Dentures-A Non-Surgical Alternative
-
"Complete denture wearers may be one of the largest under served dental patient populations, with numbers estimated at more than 40 million in the United States alone."
Many wear dentures that function poorly due to:
(a) changes in the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity (b) atrophy-bone resouption (c) changes in quantity and quality of saliva, etc. This results in a decrease of support and retention of the dentures.
It is possible to enhance the resorbed ridge and/or place implants to secure the denture; not all patients are surgical candidates, especially the elderly and the medically compromised.
These patients have to look for other non-surgical alternatives:
(a) Denture adhesive pastes, powders and pads (b) Suction cup liners The disadvantages of adhesives are:
(1) taste of adhesive (2) difficulty in removing adhesive from the denture and oral tissue (3) cost of the materials Above the gum Magnetic Retained Complete Dentures (Upper & Lower) is a relatively old technique-not fully known by the Dental profession today.
In my practice, I have had occasion to use them over the course of many years. Patients must at the outset be told this may not be a complete panacea but an aid to improve denture retention.
