(A partnership of dentistry and medicine)
Periodontics has always been a major focus in our office. Our practice has been in the forefront as a "Dental Wellness Center" for many years.
My father, Dr. Jack Zonan, practiced dentistry for 61 years. He was a student of Dr. Abraham Berliner and Drs. Paul Keyes and Dan Watt- pioneers in the field of periodontics.
It was Drs.Paul Keyes and Dan Watt who introduced us to the Phase Contrast Microscope. The microscopic exam showed the various oral bacteria flora found in health and infection. Some of these pathogenic bacteria were being found in the different organ systems of our body. This established a risk factor between bacterial oral infection and systemic diseases. It was then that the Non-Surgical treatment of Periodontal Diseases became an effective modality for treatment. A truly preventive and noninvasive treatment was born.
As dentists we now can make a far greater impact on the health of our patients. Dentistry is a vital adjunct to medicine and essential to achieving total health. Dr. Charles Mayo, physician and co-founder of the world famous Mayo Health Center,
stated very poignantly "People who keep their teeth live an average of 1 0 years longer than people who lose their teeth."
Oral infection has been determined to be the source of disease-causing bacteria that can lead to or aggravate heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, several types of cancer, and numerous other health issues, including low birth weight babies.
This is why we advocate regular periodic office visits. Having just a cleaning is inadequate. periodontal maintenance and an examination to detect any pathology before clinical symptoms appear is our best protection for optimum health.
Our aim is to keep our teeth for a Lifetime!
